Breakfast at Trout's Place: The Seasons of an Alaskan Flyfisher
Published in Paperback by Johnson Books (November, 1999)
Authors: Ken Marsh and Anthony Route

Breakfast at Trout's Place
Finally a truthful book about fishing in Alaska. Too often we hear of rivers, bays, and streams that are so thick with fish that you can walk from bank to bank without getting your feet wet. As an August / September visitor to the Wood River System in Dillingham, I experienced the pleasure of catching seven different species of fish ... but mainly the mighty silver salmon on the fly. It was hard work, but each catch was well worth the effort. Ken Marsh has captured the true essence of the Alaskan fishing experience ... hard work, late nights, cold water, bears, eagles and also the experience that so many from the "lower 48" can only wish for.

As I return to Alaska this summer, I will use this volume as a guide to fishing areas, rod weights, and patterns. Ken has hit the pitching with this book ... a must read.

A well-written book about the exciting summer the author had in Alaska. I enjoyed this book very much, and recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

Bush Pilots of Alaska

Flying Photos in AK
This is a wonderful compilation of photographs centered around flying in bush Alaska. Anyone who has lived or travelled off the beaten path in the far north knows how essential airplanes are for travel and life in the 49th state. While the essays in the book tend to be a little sappy and trite, the beautiful photographs more than compensate as the reader is shown the beauty of Alaska from the perspective of bush planes.

Butcher, Baker: A True Account of a Serial Murderer
Published in Paperback by Onyx Books (November, 1991)
Authors: Walter Gilmour and Leland E. Hale
Average review score:

Finally a TRUE Crime Novel
This book is written by a real-life professional homicide investigator. Mr. Gilmour was an investigator with the Alaska State Troopers for many years and was, and still is, one of the most astute criminal investigators you will ever meet. This book details the incredible amount of work it takes to catch a serial killer. The most amazing part is that he has not made any changes to the story to make it "more exciting" or "more readable." The story certainly does need it. In my opinion, in this book rivals Capote's In Cold Blood, but without making up any facts.

Caribou: Wanderer of the Tundra
Published in Paperback by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (June, 2000)
Author: Tom Walker
Average review score:

Great photographs and more.
Tom Walker makes terrific nature photographs and this book has a lot of them, but this is not just a picture book. The author adds natural history information and his personal observations to create images that are more than visual. One is left with a feeling for a wild and lonely land and the place of the caribou in it. This is a good introduction to the natural history of these fascinating animals.

The Case of The Ocean Polluters in Alaska (The Adventures of Juliana Del Rio: EPA/FBI, Book 1)

Let these authors make you a fan
I wondered if this novel could possibly live up to being WORTH the asking price. I'm happy to report that if enviornmental stories are what you like, this new series is for you: if you are as new to them as I, let these authors make you a fan!

Sean Ryan, an experienced CIA and FBI agent, is transferred to the newly established Enviornmental Crimes Unit where he feels women should work, and not Soldiers. He does not want to catch 'paint dumpers'and fears this is a backward step. His first case is playing the husband of EPA investigator Juliana Del Rio aboard an Alaskan Cruise Liner. (These cruise ships have been reported transporting toxic wastes and then dumping the contents outside the three mile limit.) Ms Del Rio has the knowledge to test the waste and add more weight to the convictions as set forth by the FBI.
Just as they are wrapping up this case, Sean becomes enmeshed in the larger and unknown case having to do with the illegal manufacture and usage of nuclear weaponry, politicos on the take and the cover-ups they create to hide their dealings. With help from unlikely people, Julie is rescued before she gets too far over her head -- although as a beginner she does get herself into deep waters. Nothing they can't handle, though!

This was a well-written cozy with some interesting and thought-provoking information about nukes. I felt the focus was on the illegality as it pertained to the "World" and not just "Our Little Corner" of it. Worth reading if only for that.
(The Adventures of Juliana Del Rio: EPA/FBI - Book #1, The Case of the Ocean Polluters in Alaska was previously published under the title: "Countdown in Alaska")

ATTENTION ALL HE-MEN ! (and she-women)
This collection of stories, though set in the frozen wastes of the Yukon during the "Gold Rush", is timeless. As man and his technologies advance and his search for wealth continues, time-honored and primitive ways are pushed aside. London expertly illustrates this same experience through the indigenous peoples of the north and the "white" man. He makes it easy for the reader to identify with the native's point of view, and to understand the perplexity they experienced dealing with these strange new men with "fire in their blood". London puts the reader at the council fire of great chiefs, in the canoes of warriors, and in the lodges of mysterious shamans and "medicine" men. These stories are not only about man's struggle with nature, but with other men and perhaps the most difficult...himself. After reading these stories, I felt myself wanting to up and leave all traces of modern civilization behind. I wanted to build an igloo, put on a sealskin coat, and carve things on ivory tusks in front of a roaring fire!

Awesome page turner
This is a great book by a true master of storytelling. I couldn't put this book down and my wife couldn't get me to listen to anything... Give this story a try and you will be in for a ride you won't regret. This is about the frontier Alaska in 1800's and about one seriously tough guy that landed there to make his fortune and found his future... Awesome Story.
